Eye Treatment Procedures

In Ayurveda, all diseases of eye are mentioned under the specialized branch called Shalakya Tantra. Many of highly potent therapeutic treatment procedures are described under this heading. The aim of all treatment procedures is to prevent the degeneration process and to restore the vision. The procedures like anjana, nethradhara and tharpanam etc. helps to correct the vitiated metabolism of the cells and to stimulate the regeneration of the retinal cells and optic nerves.

Nethradhara – Filtered decoction of the medicated herbs are poured in the nasal canthus of the eye from a height of 2 angula (approx. 4 cm) and for a period of about 15 min. This procedure helps to do clean the channels (Srotas) of the eye and do the aam pachana (detoxification at the cellular level).

Tharpanam – The highly powerful
procedure which rejuvenates the eyes. The paste of gram is applied around the eyes which gives the appearance of a dam. The medicated ghee is then poured in the eyes for a time described according to the diseased condition. The active ingredients of the ghee medicine start the regeneration process and the vision is restored.

Sirodhara – Patient is made to lie on the dhara table. Medicated oil is poured on the forehead continuously for about a period of 45 min. This process gives strength to the nervous system and increases the blood circulation of the optic nerves. It is also effective in many degenerative diseases of the brain like paralysis, cerebral atrophy, parkinson’s disease and degenerative diseases of nervous system. Medicated oils, milk, buttermilk mixed with medicated decoctions are some of the fluids used.

Sirovasty – This procedure is more powerful than sirodhara. Medicine is kept inside a leather bag fitted around the head at a bearable temperature for a prescribed time. It also acts very effectively in all degenerative diseases of the nervous system.

Nasya – This is a procedure in which medicated oil is poured in both the nostrils empty stomach. The toxins accumulated in the areas above the neck are brought out via this route. Nostrils are the doors to the brain according to Ayurveda classics.

Anjana and Aschotanam are the procedures by which medicine is applied inside the eyes.


General Treatment Procedures –

Pizhichhil – in this procedure a linen cloth is dipped in luke warm medicated oil and then squeezed over the body from a suitable height. Then mild massage is done over the body for making its absorption better. The duration of the procedure depends on the strength of the patient. It is a potent procedure in many of the neurological diseases like hemiplegia, motor neuron disease, muscular dystrophy and rheumatoid arthritis etc.

Kizhi – this is heating up of the body with the help of linen clothes filled with medicated herbs and dried powders followed by a massage. It soothes the inflamed area and relieves from pain in many diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, spondylosis back pain etc.

Navarakizhi – patient is made to lie on the massage table comfortably.the cloth bags filled with cooked navara rice is rubbed all over the body by heating it in milk. It is very effective procedure in paralysis, motor neuron disease, muscular dtstrophy etc. the procedure is done for about a period of one hour.

Abhyanga – in this procedure massabe is done on the whole body with suitable medicated oils. This helps in the cleansing and detoxification of the body. It cleanses and removes the metabolic wastes. This process is generally followed by vashpa swedana (Steam Bath)

Vasti – this treatment procedure is highly potent therapeutic procedurewhich involves different types of enemas made from herbal decoctions, oils and honey. In ayurvedic classics, it has got an important place. Apart from the cleansing it does, it has strong rasayana properties (Rejuvenating qualities). It is quite effective in hemiplegia, slip disc, low back pain, rheumatoid arthritis, sciatica etc.

Udhvarthanam – it is a specialized massage with is done with herbal powders. It helps to burn out the excess fat of the body. This process is generally followed by vashpa swedana (Steam Bath). It is an effective procedure in the treatment of obesity and related disorders.
