Causes and Symptoms of Amblyopia

What is Amblyopia?

Amblyopia is also known as a lazy eye. It takes place when there is a deficiency of vision in one eye as the eye along with the brain is not working in coordination. It is the consequence of underdeveloped normal vision at the time of early childhood. The brain may not pay attention to the image from the amblyopic eye.  Infants are not born with 20/20 vision in both the eyes. They must develop it between the age of 6 to 9 years by using both the eyes. A similarly focused image falls on the retina of both the eyes and if this phenomenon doesn’t take place then, vision will not develop appropriately in that particular eye or it could be both the eyes too, this reduced vision eye becomes amblyopic. In early childhood, this can be successfully treated. This common disorder affects up to 4 percent of all children. This must be identified as early as feasible in order to put off permanent vision loss. After the age of 6 to 9 years, the amblyopia treatment in Ayurveda might not result in visual perfection.

Causes of Amblyopia

Muscle Imbalance

The most ordinary cause of the amblyopic eye is an imbalance in the muscles which holds the position the eyes. This unevenness can lead the eyes to cross inwards or turn outwards and put off them from working together in a synchronized way.

Obstruction or cloudiness

Any trouble with one eye, like cloudy area in the lens or cataract, may deprive a child of perfect vision in that particular eye. Deprivation amblyopia in infants has a need for instant treatment to avoid permanent vision failure. It generally occurs in the most severe amblyopic eye.

Refractive Anisometropia

Amblyopia comes about when one eye, generally the eye with the larger refractive error lingers out of focus as it is more short-sighted or myopic, hypermetropic, or astigmatic as compared to the other eye, and turn out to be the main visionary eye. As a result, the use of the unfocused eye decreases, and it fails to get appropriately connected to the brain and doesn’t develop the normal vision.

Some other causes of amblyopia can be:-

  • Glaucoma, which is high pressure in your eye that can lead to vision problems and blindness.
  • Genetics, or a family history of amblyopia
  • Vitamin A deficiency
