Let's Know about Tonsillitis
Tonsils are a part of our system and work as the first line of defense against any infection or disease. These are lymph nodes present at the back of the neck and produce white blood cells to combat any health threats that enter our system. But when these nodes get contaminated by microbial activity, the problem is known as tonsillitis.
Tonsillitis is common among children and youngsters. The problem results in inflammation, fever, and pain that increase the discomfort of sufferers. Modern medicine suggests surgery as a cure for this problem but Ayurveda believes that it can be treated by working on the root cause of this disease.
Symptoms of Tonsillitis
The most typical symptoms of tonsillitis include:
- Swelling and redness in the tonsils
- Sore throat
- Pain while swallowing
- Yellow or white patches on the tonsils
- Stiffness in the neck
- Headache
- Bad breath
- Tender and enlarged glands in the neck
- Stomach aches in rare cases
- Fever
- Throaty, muffled and scratchy voice
Causes of Tonsillitis
Usually, tonsillitis is caused by seasonal or common viral activity. However, sometimes, tonsillitis is also caused by bacterial activity. Streptococcus pyogenes is the most regular bacterial cause of tonsillitis. There are a few other strains of this bacteria that have a similar effect on our tonsils.
Diagnosis and Tonsillitis Treatment In Ayurveda
The Ayurvedic treatment for tonsillitis works through a close investigation of its causes. The Ayurvedic texts describe this disease as Gallayu – a problem caused by poor processing and over-accumulation of toxins in the patient’s body. Ayurveda begins the treatment by changing diet and eating patterns of the patient along with some panchakarma therapies.
The major steps involved in the Ayurvedic treatment of tonsillitis are:
- Management of local swelling, pain, and redness.
- Treatment of fever and inflammation caused by the infection.
- Diet restrictions and lifestyle adjustments to avoid any further damage to tonsils to restore the natural, healthy state of tonsils.
- Surgery is suggested for those going through multiple episodes of tonsillitis which complicates breathing, swallowing, along with accumulation of pus in the tonsils.
Sphatika – The purified powder of Sphatika is applied over affected tonsils. It is also taken internally by measuring 1 gm of powder in lukewarm water, Agastya Rasayana – This herbal preparation is advised for people with severe tonsillitis. This preparation should be taken twice daily as one teaspoon mixed with honey, Khadiradi, Vacha, Yashti Madhu, and Kulanjana are a few home remedies suggested along with Panchakarma therapies for tonsillitis.
Tonsillitis Diet Plan & Lifestyle
Patients suffering from tonsillitis need to make following changes to their diet and lifestyle:
- Tonsillitis patients must take proper care of personal hygiene and should therefore, wash their hands thoroughly to avoid any more microbes from getting into their mouth.
- Tonsillitis patients should also avoid sharing their food, water, drinking and eating utensils with others.
- If your child is diagnosed with tonsillitis make sure to replace the toothbrush to avoid spread of infection to others.
- Stay away from spicy, acidic, and cold food substances. Even sour substances like buttermilk, curds and icecreams should also be kept at bay.
- Patients should be administered a liquid diet that makes swallowing easy.
- Adults who smoke should abstain from the habit while undergoing the treatment of this disease.
- Give proper rest to the throat and speak as little as possible.

Why To Choose Ayurveda?
Looks for the Root Cause
The ayurvedic approach of disease looks for the root cause and not merely the symptoms. Ayurveda offers two ways of treatment; One is Shodhan, and the other is Shaman. Shodhan is complete detoxification of the body by Panchakarma therapies. Shaman is balancing the doshas by Ayurveda medicines, diet, and lifestyle changes. Ayurveda medicines always work better in a patient detoxified with Panchakarma.
Safe Medicines
Ayurveda medicines are processed most naturally and not in the synthetic and chemical form. For this reason, the herbs are soft on the body, and there is no risk of side effects even if the patient requires to take them for longer durations. The complete eradication of the root cause ensures the cure and prevents future health complications.
Holistic Approach
Ayurveda is not merely a medical science. Instead, it is a philosophical science too. The basic principles of Ayurveda consider an individual human a specific identity and hence his treatment. Ayurveda gives importance to the treatment of the patient rather than the treatment of the disease. Two patients of the same disease can have different treatments because of the difference in their body constitution.
