Irregular Periods Treatment in Ayurveda

The menstruation is a natural process of purifying the body in women. For menorrhagia treatment in Ayurveda, the doctor has to find out the cause of menstrual problems according to ayurveda. This process has some principles, according to the type of Dosha.

In the Vata-type of women, the bleeding is relatively less, the color is dark red or often brownish. The menstruation does not continue very long – from 3 to 5 days.

In the Pitta-type of women, the menstruation is generally heavy, as Pitta Dosha is related to the blood. The blood is dark; there might be variations such as red, purple. The Pitta-menstruation continues from 5 to 7 days on average.

In the Kapha-type body, the menstruation is continuous – may last more than a week and the bleeding is moderate. The blood is bright red might have an impurity of mucus.

The menstruation should not be accompanied by pain or other discomforts as the natural process, and it should not cause health problems. However, many women have problems with this monthly cycle. This leads to a tense situation for a woman and is because of the imbalance in the doshas.

For the normalization of the monthly cycle the state of balance of the Doshas must be restored.

Periods usually start during puberty, menarche, between the ages of 10 and 16 years, and continue until menopause, when a woman is 45- to 55-years old. This cycle usually lasts for between 3 and 7 days, and the amount of blood loss can vary from person to person.

The menstrual cycle usually comes along with various menstrual problems such as irregular periods or painful period which is also known as dysmenorrhea. Women may experience problems or irregularities in their menstrual cycle. Common problems include:

  1. Irregular Periods - It is the condition where the menstrual cycle is shorter or longer than average.
  2. Menorrhagia (Heavy Periods) - Heavy periods can be so painful that you would find it very difficult to do even basic regular chores.
  3. Amenorrhea - Amenorrhea is the problem when menstrual periods are absent before menopause.
  4. Menstrual Migraine – Most women often suffer from a severe migraine during their menstrual cycle.

So in order to reduce the further complications related to these menstrual problems, treatment for periods is necessary. There have been a number of cases related to Dysmenorrhea, which is termed as painful periods in normal language.

There are two types of it as given below:

  1. Primary Dysmenorrhea - It is very usual when it comes to teenagers. The primary agent responsible for it is a chemical called prostaglandin which results in the menstrual cramps. The symptoms of this type of dysmenorrhea include backache, vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, and frequent headache. The symptoms associated with the problem exist for a day or two.
  2. Secondary Dysmenorrhea - Some of the physical conditions like fibroids, endometriosis, and pelvic inflammatory disease are accountable for it. The type of this type of dysmenorrhea results in chronic pain.

There are many causes of these menstrual problems such as:

  1. Stress and lifestyle causes - Gaining or losing some weight, dieting, changes in exercise routines, illness, or other disruptions in a woman's daily routine can have a negative effect on her menstrual cycle.
  2. Contraceptive pills - Most birth control pills contain a combination of the hormones estrogen and progestin. Regularly using these birth control pills can affect menstruation.
  3. Fibroids - The fibroids are small benign (noncancerous) growths in the lining of the uterus. These tumors may cause heavy bleeding and pain during periods.
  4. Endometriosis - The tissue that lines the uterus breaks down every month which results in the menstrual flow. Endometriosis occurs when the endometrial tissue starts to grow outside the uterus. Therefore it may cause abnormal bleeding, cramps or pain before and during periods.
  5. Polycystic ovary syndrome - In polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), the ovaries produce a large number of androgens, which are male hormones. There may be a formation of small fluid-filled sacs or cysts in the ovaries. The hormonal changes can prevent eggs from maturing, and so ovulation may not take place properly. This is the major cause of menstrual problems.
  6. Premature ovarian insufficiency - This condition occurs in women below 40 whose ovaries do not function normally. The menstrual cycle stops, similar to menopause.
  7. Hormonal influences - Life cycle changes that influence the hormonal balance include puberty, menopause, pregnancy, and childbirth, and breastfeeding.
  8. Malfunctioning of glands - malfunction of the thyroid gland, the hypothalamus (part of the brain that helps regulate the menstrual cycle) or the pituitary gland.
  9. Depression and some other forms of mental illness.

There are certain symptoms that a woman can undergo due to menstrual problems. However, some common symptoms include:

  1. Breast swelling and tenderness
  2. Tension
  3. Bloating
  4. Acne breakouts
  5. Leg, back, or stomach cramping
  6. Acne signs over the surface of the skin and face
  7. Frequent headaches are common
  8. In many cases, constipation also occurs
  9. Many patients also complain regarding diarrhea
  10. Food cravings are also observed to be common
  11. A chronic phase of depression or feeling blue
  12. Getting irritated with a tiny amount of stress
  13. Insomnia
  14. Dizziness
  15. Depression and mood swings
  16. Anger and anxiety
